Driving resources, especially for older adults

By Health & Senior Services Librarian Rose Barnes

Safety while driving is important at any age, but as you age, there are some additional factors to consider in regard to driving safely. Stiff joints or pain, slower reaction time and reflexes, changes in eyesight, and hearing loss all can affect your driving.

However, with age comes experience and expertise. So while you might be feeling some conflicting emotions about driving and aging, below are some driving resources that you might find helpful.

Attend a rules-of-the-road refresher course

Older adults interested in brushing up on their knowledge of driving rules and regulations are invited to a rules-of-the-road class presented by a representative from the Secretary of State’s office and hosted by Oak Park Township Senior Services.

The next session will be held on Wednesday, July 7, from 1:30 to 3:30 pm, outside at the Oak Park Township Senior Services office (130 South Oak Park Ave., Oak Park). In case of inclement weather, the class will be held virtually, and all registrants will receive an email with the virtual class link the day before.

Pre-registration is required. Call Kristen Norman at 708.383.8060 to register.
