Have you ever tried to translate a webpage from one language to another? While some webpages provide a button to switch between certain languages, this is not always the case. Fortunately, most web browsers include translation functions that you can use to translate a webpage into another language.
In this post, we’ll walk through the steps of translating webpages in a few commonly used web browsers.
Google Chrome | Safari | Firefox | Edge
Google Chrome
To translate a webpage
- Click the three-dot menu icon in the upper-right corner of the screen.
- Then, toward the bottom of the menu, click Translate.
- Find the translation menu pop-up toward the end of your URL bar. Within this translation menu, click the three-dot menu icon and click Choose Another Language.
- A drop-down menu will appear, prompting you to select a Language to Translate into. Click the drop-down menu.
- Next, select a language from the list or type the name of the language. Then, click Translate. This will translate the webpage into the language you’ve selected.
To set autotranslate
- Near the end of the URL bar on a webpage that has already been translated, click Google’s translation icon.
- Then, click the three-dot menu icon within the translation menu pop-up.
- From here, you can select additional options such as Choose Another Language, Always Translate English, Never Translate English, Never Translate This Site, or Page Not in English. Selecting Always Translate English may be helpful for automatically translating languages without having to adjust settings for each webpage you view.

Safari
To set your preferred language
- Click the View menu at the top of the screen.
- Toward the bottom of the menu, hover over Translation and then click Preferred Languages. This will take you to the language settings for your device.
- Under Preferred Languages, click the + icon button to add a language. After adding a language, your device may offer you the option to set that language as your primary language.
- After selecting your preferred option, close the Language settings window and return to Safari.
To translate a webpage
- Click the View menu at the top of the screen, hover over Translation, then click Translate to Spanish, as in the example, or the relevant language you selected earlier.
- Safari may prompt you to enable translation. Click Enable Translation to proceed. Safari will then translate the webpage you are viewing, and should continue to translate other pages linked within the same website.

Firefox
To set your preferred language
- Click the three-dash menu icon in the upper-right corner of the screen.
- Then, toward the bottom of this menu, click Settings.
- Once in settings, scroll down towards Language and Appearance, then scroll further to the Language option. Click Choose to select your preferred language for displaying webpages.
- Click Select a language to add to add a language as an option, then click Add. From here, you can order languages by preference.
- Then, click OK to confirm your selection.
To translate a webpage
- When on a webpage you want to translate, click the three-dash menu icon in the upper-right corner, then select the Translate page option.
- A pop-up window will appear toward the right of the screen that will allow you to switch the language of the page. Select your preferred language under Translate to and then click Translate. For some, but not all, webpages, Firefox will continue translating content if you click links to other pages within the same website.

Edge
To set your preferred language
- Click the three-dot menu icon in the upper-right corner of the screen.
- Then, click Settings toward the bottom of the menu.
- From the settings page, click Languages.
- Then, click Add languages to add a language you want to read webpages in.
- After selecting that language, click Add.
To translate webpages
Once you’ve added a preferred language in settings, you should be able to translate webpages to that language.
- While viewing a webpage, right-click any empty space within the page that’s not a link. A menu will appear that lists Translate to as an option. The language listed will be the most recent language that you have translated into, or a default language.
- Click Translate to…, even if it’s not immediately listing the language you need to translate into.
- After clicking that option, a language selection icon will appear at the end of the URL bar. Click this icon, and a Translated page pop-up menu will appear with more options.
- From here, you can select another language to translate the webpage into, and then click Translate.
