Hold/Request Items
Hold
Item in Catalog
Oak Park Public Library cardholders can place up to 30 hold
requests on items found in the Library
Catalog. Have your card number ready and follow these
instructions. You will be notified when your item is
available for you to pick up at the Library. Learn how to
receive email notification of
holds that are ready for pick up.
Request Item NOT in Catalog
Residents with Oak Park Public Library cards can request
a title or ask that the Library purchase a title for the collection.
Make a request online or
at the Information Services Desk at the Main
Library (708-452-3480), at the Dole
Branch, or at the Maze Branch.
The item will be borrowed through interlibrary
loan or purchased as appropriate. You will be notified if
the item is not available. Materials selection is the responsibility
of the Collection Development
Coordinator.
Interlibrary Loan
Residents with Oak Park Public Library cards are able to request
interlibrary loan service for items not available at the Oak
Park Public Library. Make a request
online or in person at the Information Services Desk at
the Main Library (708-452-3480),
at the Dole Branch, or at the
Maze Branch.
Items
Available through Interlibrary Loan
Items available through interlibrary loan include books, articles
from journals, compact discs, videotapes, DVDs, audiocassettes,
books on tape, microfiche, and microfilms. The majority of patron
requests through interlibrary loan are met successfully. Two
common reasons that requests are not met are that the item is
too popular for other libraries to loan or the item is too fragile
to loan.
Fees for Interlibrary Loan
Every attempt is made to obtain requested items from libraries
within the state. The request is sent to out-of-state libraries
only if the Oak Park Public Library is unable to obtain a requested
item from within Illinois and the patron is willing to pay a
$5.00 out-of-state loan fee.
Use E-PAY to pay interlibrary loan fees
Wait time for Interlibrary Loan
It is impossible to predict the length of wait for each item
since the interlibrary loan service depends on staff at other
libraries. The Oak Park Public Library regularly follows through
with our requests to other libraries to be sure there will be
no delay in processing.
Lost or Damaged Items
Patrons who lose or damage library items will be charged current
list price for the item.

E-PAY to pay for lost or damaged items
Non-Resident Cardholders
The Oak Park Public Library allows reciprocal borrowing for
anyone who has a valid Metropolitan Library System card, Chicago
Public Library card, or card from another public library that
participates in the Illinois Statewide Reciprocal Borrowing
Agreement. You must present a picture ID and a current proof
of residency to verify current address. Registration may be
required on your first visit to the Oak Park Public Library.
Other patrons may purchase a non-resident card for use within
the Metropolitan Library System for an annual fee of $311.47.

Overdue Notices
Overdue notices are sent in an effort to help patrons by reminding
them of the items that have become overdue. The first notice
is made by the Library's automated telephone system. If the
items are not returned two subsequent notices are sent by mail.
Patrons are responsible for returning items on time even if
they do not receive the overdue notice. Learn how
to sign up for email notification of overdue items and courtesy
reminders.
Self Checkout
There are six Self Checkouts at the Main Library and one at
each of the Branch Libraries. To use a Self Checkout insert
your library card or enter your library card number on the touch
screen. Place your library items on the white pad. Follow the
instructions on the touch screen. Video
