Subject Guides - Travel Internationally
These Library items and helpful Internet sites provide assistance
in researching international travel. These Internet sites are
not connected with the Oak Park Public Library. A bookmark detailing
where each country's travel section can be found on the shelves
is available at the Information Services Desk on the Third Floor
of the Main Library.
General Guidebooks
The Library owns a broad array of guidebooks including Fodor's,
Frommer's, Michelin, Lonely Planet, Footprint,
Rick Steves', Moon Handbooks, Bradt, Baedeker,
Adventure Guides, Passport Guides, Rough Guides,
Let's Go, etc., but look further. We have an intentionally
wide and interesting variety of other guidebooks for international
travel destinations, including:
Cadogan Guides This excellent British series covers
destinations from the Amazon to Venice. The Library owns almost
80 titles in this popular series.
DK Eyewitness Guides This is a real favorite for the
photos and descriptions.
For Dummies The series covers France, Ireland, Spain,
and more; great introductory books.
Ulysses Guides These guides are especially strong in
the western hemisphere and South America.

These two volumes offer in-depth coverage of the life that locals
and expats lead in these foreign countries; invaluable insights
into cultures, too.

These three volumes focus on locales and writers and provides
great contextual data for potential travelers.
Internet Sites for the Basics
About Passports and Visas
US
Department of State provides everything you need to know
about getting a passport, visas, and necessary documents. It
also has extensive international travel information. Note: the
local Oak Park passport office is in the Main Post Office at
901 Lake Street.
Health Issues
Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention offers specific destination
health information regarding suggested and required vaccinations,
shots, local outbreaks, etc.
General Travel Information
USA.gov is the government's
official web portal. Scroll down the
Travel
and Recreation page to the International Travel section
for a vast source of information.
Internet Sites for Tickets and Fares
The old standby, established leaders:
Expedia Travel is easy
to use and packed with content and services.
Orbitz offers a broad
selection of fares, allows for time-flexible fare searching,
and lots of packages.
Travelocity is full-service,
with customer service available around the clock. Especially
strong with cruises.
And some excellent new entries:
Kayak.com allows you to
search for round-trip or one-way flights.
QIXO is another new airfare
search engine.
SideStep also offers
bargain fares from multiple airlines.

Many people planning a trip find forums very helpful. To use
a forum, go to the website, find your location of interest, and
read the relevant postings. This is a great way to exchange ideas,
