Art in the Main Library
To date several pieces of art by local artists have been purchased
and installed in the Main Library. The more than $50,000 raised
by the Bricks
for Art Program and proceeds from the Gala
Preview Party helped purchase this artwork. The Oak Park
Public Library anticipates additional artwork will be purchased
in the future.

Carole Harrison, Michigan
"Unity and Growth"

brass and copper sculpture
Vestibule, First Floor
In 1964 the Village Art Fair Board invited sculptors from across
the country to submit designs for a library sculpture. The design
by Harrison, a Michigan sculptor, was unanimously chosen by
the selection committee. Once awarded the $6000 commission,
Harrison spent 15 months completing the 9-foot-by-12-foot brass
and copper sculpture. In 1966 the completed sculpture titled
"Unity and Growth" was installed on the terrace of
the Main Library. At the Grand Opening of the new Main Library
in October 2003
"Unity and Growth" was unveiled in its new location
on the interior of the building. The sculpture is composed of
nine adult figures and three children, illustrating the diversity
of people who use the Library. More history

a Pocket Art Vending Machine
A retrofitted cigarette machine in the
Art Gallery of the Main
Library sells art.
Purchase a $5 token at the Circulation Desk in the Lobby. Insert
the token in the Art-o-mat's coin slot. Select an artist and
pull the appropriate knob. Collect your art from the bottom
of the machine. Presto! You're a patron of the arts!
Half the token price goes to the artist,
$1 to Art-o-mat, and $1.50 goes to the Library to help purchase
additional permanent art.
