The WWW is distributed

By distributed, we mean that the WWW is not a single collection of information that resides on a big old computer somewhere.

The WWW is a collection of files that resides on different computers all around the world. These files are written by different people who in most cases don't know each other. And people who put information on the WWW could have all types of reasons for doing so. In addition, it is possible for just about anyone (including you...yes YOU) to publish information on the WWW (at no direct cost to yourself).

And, finally, unlike with traditional publishing (e.g. books, magazines, etc) across the billions of pages of information available on the WWW, there is no agency that exists to enforce any standard of validity or value.
