First let's consider the difference between two kinds of addresses, email addresses and web addresses (URLs).

You are already familiar with web page addresses, or URLs. These are the addresses for web pages on the WWW. Web pages addresses look like:

http://www.yahoo.com

or

http://www.oppl.org/reference/census/index.htm
