March 2002 events in the Main Library Project

Demolition Begins
Lettering removed from the front of the building is on the south wall of the temporary main library building.The Village issued the demolition permit on Monday, March 11, 2002 and the contractor M&R Wrecking began work that same day. Demolition of the the 834 Lake Street building is expected to continue about six weeks. Demolition of the exterior of the building began with the erection of an eight foot fence around the site.

Week One A crane hovers over the building, removing materials from the roof. Front Entrance Late March snow did not slow the demolition process.
Week Two A view from across Lake Street. South East Corner A crane hovers over the building, removing materials from the roof.
Week Three From Lake Street the building has begun to look hollow. South West Corner A view of the building from the south west corner shows only minor changes.
Week Four What remains of the south wall along Lake Street is now only one-story tall. North A view of the building and the north lot from the north.
Week Five The building has been flattened to its first floor level. North East Corner A view of the north side of the building from Scoville Park.
North West Corner A removed section of the concrete flooring allows debris to be removed from the basement level.
Interior An interior view of the first floor non-fiction area shows exposed pipes and gravel floor.
