December 2002 events in
the Main Library Project
Topping Out Ceremony
On
Monday, December 9, 2002 at 3:00 p.m. the Library
Board of Trustees was joined by village representatives for a brief
topping out ceremony at the site of the new main library building. The
final glulam decking is expected to be installed on the the third floor
roof later in the week to complete the roof top of the building. Since
stairways and elevators are still in construction those that attended
the ceremony were transported to the third floor via lift. Library Board
President, John Hayes, remarked that the building project is continuing
according to the projected timeline and that feat is a result of the commendable
cooperation of the many parties involved. He also is looking forward to
sitting in the completed building and looking at the beautiful view of
Scoville Park. Ed Byers, Executive Director of the Library, thanked those
involved for making it such a successful process. To mark the occasion
those in attendance signed their names to a third floor concrete column
that will be covered in the finished building.

Work Progresses on All
Sides
Working under winter
protection the Meyne Company completed the face brick on the north side
of the building. Brick work was started on the west side and the penthouse
level. The Meyne Company also started window frame installation on the
north side and installation of metal studs at the first floor feature
wall.
The most visible work
of the month was the the installation of the glulam beams and decking
to complete the roof on the east side of the building. Work behind the
scenes included the pouring of the concrete slab on the basement parking
garage level, installation of the book return conveyor, and setting of
the air handler and chillers.
