December 2000 events in the Main Library Project

Construction Planned at Dole Learning Center
In December 2000 the Oak Park Village Board approved a $1.6 million contract for the renovation and modernization of the Dole Learning Center to make the building fully accessible. The project will be partially supported by funds administered by the Secretary of State and State Librarian.
Dole Learning Center Construction Project

Preliminary Design Presentation at Public Meeting on December 13 and December 16, 2000
The architects of Nagle Hartray Danker Kagan McKay Architect Planners of Chicago and their landscape architect, Carol YH Yetken Landscape Architects, presented these preliminary designs in two public meetings at the Main Library. This represented a starting point in the design process -- about 15 to 20 percent of the Schematic Design phase, which in turn represents about 15 percent of the total project including construction.

The primary purpose of these preliminary designs was to address items relevant to the Village’s consideration of the partial closure of Grove Avenue and the issuance of a special use permit. Drawings focused on the relationship between a new main library building and its neighbors, especially Scoville Park. Design of floor plans and building interiors, as well as development of site and exterior building design, would be addressed in future design presentations after the Village has decided on the closure of Grove Avenue. The design goals of the project were also presented.
