August 2000 events in the
Main Library Project
Pre-design Orientation
Architects
Don McKay and Dirk Danker of Nagle Hartray presented a Pre-design Orientation
meeting for the Library Board of Directors in August 2000. Using slides,
they introduced architectural concepts from other recently built and remodeled
libraries as well as other buildings which surround the Main Library.
They examined building materials, entry ways, stairways, ceiling heights
and the use of glass and artwork with the goal of encouraging Board members
to look at architectural designs differently.
Contracts for Preliminary
Engineering Work and Traffic Study
The Library contracted
for both a survey of the site and preliminary engineering work for Grove
Avenue utility relocation with SDI Consultants.
In addition, the Library
contracted for a study with Kenig, Lingren, OHara, Aboona, Inc. to determine
the traffic impact of the proposed new library building. The study, completed
in September 2000, also considered the impact on nearby parking due to
closing and vacating parts of Grove Avenue. The study analyzed the traffic
impacts of existing conditions and future conditions assuming other future
developments in the area. Capacity analyses were performed for critical
intersections in the area as well as access points to the new library
building.
Soil
Sampling
The
Library contracted for soil sampling completed in early October 2000.
The drilling company, PSI, drew core samples of soil from the proposed
library site by drilling 80 feet underground in four separate locations.
